How this works

This is a directional model, not a forecast. Use it to get a feel for how long a school morning takes and where it goes wrong, not to predict a particular Tuesday. Relative differences are much more reliable than the absolute times.

• Real OpenStreetMap main roads, simulated second by second in Eclipse SUMO: every school bus for each area's schools, parents' cars and two-wheelers, and commuters.
• Worst school bus trip is the longest trip in 20, door to gate. Median is the typical bus child. Child-hours counts every child's trip.
• The school data is placeholder. Locations come from OpenStreetMap, but bell times, bus counts and enrolment are estimates.
• This models roads, not schools. A long trip here says something about the road network a bus has to cross, not about how any school runs its transport.
• An exploration, not a source of truth. The simulator runs on assumptions. Bell times, bus counts and enrolment are estimates, the road network is simplified, and no figure here has been checked against a real school run. It is a tool for exploring what a morning might look like, not a source of truth. For actual timings and official information, ask the school or the transport operator, and check the relevant authority. Please don't cite these numbers as fact, or use them to make claims about any school, society, area or institution.
• The times are probably an underestimate. Side streets, gate chaos, rain and road surface aren't modelled. Where press reports give real trip times, they're longer than the model's.
• The children in ride-alongs are illustrative. Nothing you do here is sent anywhere.
• School, society, company and place names and marks belong to their respective owners, and appear here only to identify locations. No affiliation, sponsorship or endorsement is implied. Locations and other details come from OpenStreetMap and public sources, may be incomplete, inaccurate or out of date, and nothing here is official.
